Memorial University Women’s basketball team pulled off a 10-point comeback, making this the second 10-point comeback for the university today, beating the Acadia Axe-Women 71-68. The bottom ranked team in the bracket has pulled off the first major upset of the weekend in dramatic fashion.
In the first half, AUS women’s first team all-star Elizabeth Iseyemi took over scoring 17-points helping the Axe-Women jump out a 41-31 lead going into half time.
The second half started slow, but Seahawks forward Hannah Green and AUS first team all-star Alana Short led a huge comeback to pull the team back within two points heading into the fourth quarter. The big story of the game was the Axe-Women’s inability to control the tempo of the game leading to 20 turnovers. Hannah Green hit two big three pointers down the stretch to give the Seahawks the lead going into the final moments. The game came down to the last 12-seconds with Memorial up by 1, but the turnover troubles the Acadia team faced all day came back to haunt them as they turned the ball over and sealed the 1 point victory for the Seahawks.
Standout performers for the winning Seahawks were Alana Short who scored a team high 21-points and 8 assist, while game MVP Hannah Green had 20-points and 7-assist. In a losing effort Elizabeth Iseyemi scored a game high 28-points and 5-rebounds, while Bianca Helmig chipped in with 12-points, 6-rebounds and 5-assist.
The Memorial Seahawks take on the University of New Brunswick in a semi-final matchup to determine who will play in Sunday’s championship game.
