Neita leads the way with 17 as STFX advances to the semi-finals

A busy weekend of University basketball kicked off with a battle between the STFX X-Women and UPEI Panthers in Quarter-final Women’s action.

The Panthers led after the first frame 19-16, and Lauren Rainford was the leading scorer, putting up five points and two assists. For the X-Women, Shannon Neita started their offence with five points and four rebounds.
Both teams traded points throughout the first half, but the X-Women couldn’t miss, shooting 67% from beyond the arc and 56% from the field, leading them to a 10-point lead at halftime, 47-37. Katie Upham had 11 points at the half, shooting 5 of 9 from the field, and fellow guard Kristine Cooper was the hot hand with 12 points on 5 of 12 shooting.

Points in the paint (32-10) & points off rebounds (33-22) continued to be the story in the third quarter as the X-Women poured it on, leading 62-47 with one quarter to go. Shooting nearly 50% from 3-point-land, the X-Women have multiple players more than willing to pull the trigger, making a significant difference in the contest.

X-Women guard, Avery Walker, who dealt with an injury late in the first half, went on a 7-0 run in the second half and now has 10 points on the campaign.

With consistent shooting all afternoon, the X-Women clinched a spot in the semi-finals winning 80-55. Shannon Neita was named player of the game, finishing with 17 points & 11 rebounds.

STFX will have to wait to find out their opponent as Memorial and Acadia battle it out at 6:30 AST.
